We’re on the move, farewell, X…
Wednesday 2 October | Jen Forster
As a values-led charity organisation that puts pride in being progressive, collaborative, creative, playful and inquisitive, it’s important that the way that we behave (whether that’s in our venue with our audiences, in our communities or in digital form through the channels we use) and the way that we communicate - are in line with those values.
Over the past few months, we’ve seen a huge rise in misinformation and hate speech on X (formerly known as Twitter) – it’s increasingly become a challenging and toxic place to be. It’s not in line with our values, and where we stand, especially in terms of our commitment to being an inclusive, anti-racist organisation.
We’ve been mulling over whether to leave X or stay for a while, and this recent shift around the riots and unrest this summer, has given us the final nudge.
Our social media strategy is about having conversation and dialogue, being part of the community of Bristol – and that’s happening on X to a lesser and lesser extent over the past few months.
Since October 2022, we’ve had a 70% decline in social media engagement on X – we’re not having as many conversations as we were, in the same depth that we were - our audiences seem to be on the move, so we need to go with them. We want to be part of positive communities with our audiences so it’s time for a change.
So that’s why, we’re leaving X.
Instead, you’ll find us over on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok.
And of course, if you want to get hold of us, you can still call, email or visit us in person.
This doesn’t mean that the other social media channels are without fault, but where there is darkness, there is often so much light (‘Gen Z team writing marketing scripts’, we see you) so it’s rarely a clear or binary thing.
The social media landscape will continue to grow and change, so we’ll continue to review where we are, and new channels that emerge - making sure that we can reach our audiences where they are.
