Statement regarding search for new Chairperson of At-Bristol Science Centre Board
Tuesday 16 May | Jen Forster
At-Bristol Science Centre is seeking a new Chairperson to take the organisation through its next phase. After 6 years Alan Moore has stepped down to make way for a new Chair to lead At-Bristol through a major programme of reinvention, based on a new focus on a culture of curiosity. Chris Sims, an existing trustee, has been appointed as Acting Chair pending the recruitment of a permanent replacement.
An educational charity, At-Bristol is a two-floor science centre filled with interactive exhibits, activities and live shows, that aims to ‘make science accessible to all’ and inspire visitors of all ages with a sense of adventure and curiosity about the world we live in.
During his tenure, Alan has overseen the installation of the UK’s only 3D digital Planetarium which now welcomes over 122,000 visitors a year; as well as the establishment of the ‘Community Open Weekend’ programme, which aims to build strong, sustainable relationships with communities in Bristol by working with under-represented groups and providing free entry to At-Bristol on selected ‘Hello’ weekends.
Visitor figures have grown by over 20% under Alan’s leadership, which has included a targeted focus on audience research and development, and resulted in the development of the ‘After Hours’ evenings for adults, and ‘Toddler Takeover’ events for under 5s – both events now regularly sell out.
Alan has helped to establish a new strategic direction for At-Bristol for the next 10 years, and leaves At-Bristol at a time where it moves to embrace a more multi-disciplinary approach, focussing on a culture of curiosity.
Alan said “Having brought At-Bristol to the brink of a major period of change, it is clear that it is time for someone new to oversee the long-term task of implementation. I am very proud of how we have redefined the Science Centre, emphasising culture as well as science.
Chris said "I thank Alan for his service as Chair of At-Bristol and wish him the very best for the future. I am pleased to have been appointed as Acting Chair of one of the city's leading educational attractions, and look forward to continuing the outstanding progress we have made as we seek a permanent Chair."
Details of the recruitment process for role of Chair will be made available shortly.
Note to Editors: Since opening in 2000 At-Bristol has had 3 Chairs, being Nick Hood, Peter McIlwraith and Alan Moore.
