Help us work towards equality in the solar system
Wednesday 10 April | Gemma Kerr
Did you know that only 11% of the craters on the planet Mercury are named after women? And for the moon and Mars that drops to only 2%!
We’re supporting research and gathering data on a range of diversities to investigate representation across the solar system. We’re looking into who is overrepresented, underrepresented and missing entirely from the naming system in our solar system – and we need your help!
Along with The Open University, we’re hosting a ‘Planetary Hackathon’ on Sat 27 & Sun 28 April. Join us online or at Pervasive Media Studio in the Watershed (Sunday only).
Come along and help us find out who is, and isn’t, represented in space - You can join either in person, or online. Here are the details:
What is a hackathon?
A collaboration between lots of people to achieve something in a short space of time. We are getting people together to collect data that will later be analysed by researchers.
When and where is the Planetary Hackathon?
Saturday 27 April: Join online, 10am – 4pm
Sunday 28 April: Join online or at Pervasive Media Studio, Watershed. 10am – 4pm
The Watershed is a fully accessible venue, with a café for food and drink.
You do not have to stay for the whole event – just show up when you can! Some people will do the full two days, others only two hours.
What will I be doing?
As part of this data entry hackathon you would be researching the backgrounds of people that have craters named after them. Research will focus on gender, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, and other demographic information.
Do I need experience?
Absolutely no research experience is required. You’ll be supported throughout the event by We The Curious staff, researchers across the country, and each other! All you will need is a laptop (please still get in touch if you do not have access to a laptop!).
How do I get involved?
Please email gemma.kerr@wethecurious.org to register your interest or ask any questions. Thank you.
Big thanks to our excellent neighbours Pervasive Media Studio, Watershed for supporting us with space this event.
