Come and join the nest – At-Bristol brings The Cocoon to Arcadia’s family fun day in Bristol this weekend!
Wednesday 18 November | Jen Forster
On Sunday 30 August, At-Bristol, the harbourside science centre, will be joining forces with Arcadia, Team Love and Bristol 2015 to create ‘The Cocoon’ – a creative hub full of free hands-on activities and fun for all of the family to enjoy!
Arcadia’s iconic Spider will awaken amongst the histories and traditions of Queen Square for a series of special shows on 4 and 5 September, uniting sustainable ideas with theatrical experiences and music in a seminal moment of spectacle. Built in Bristol from recycled military hardware and forged into a celebratory arena, the new Metamorphosis show will see a line-up of DJ’s including Roni Size, Leftfield and Annie Mac.
As the giant Arcadia spider builds its nest in Queen Square, for one day only, The Cocoon activity day will be a chance for families to come down and join in the fun during the build-up to the big event, with lots of metamorphosis-inspired activities suitable for all ages.
Curated by At-Bristol Science Centre, the pop-up space in Queen Square will be open from 10-4 on Sunday 30, and will feature makers, tinkerers, dreamers and organisations from around Bristol including:
A bin-dwelling beat-boxing caterpillar, with juggling hoop artists and clowns from Alice in Wasteland
A pop-up Planetarium from the Explorer Dome
‘Scribble Bot’ robots from At-Bristol Science Centre
Fashion and face-painting workshops from the Creative Youth Network
Printing and painting a ‘graffiti vinyl’ masterpiece with Art Troupe
Making musical instruments from scrap with LitterARTI
Anna Starkey, At-Bristol’s Creative Director said: “Giant mechanical pyrotechnic spider sculpture performance spaces don’t pop up down the road too often, so we’re really excited to be curating a spider’s Cocoon of activities for the Arcadia family day. As the UK’s most sustainable science centre, the smart re-use and recycling of materials is right up our street, and so we’re very inspired by Arcadia’s concept of Metamorphosis and transformation for their new show. Apparently the spider is fuelled by leftover fat from Bristol’s chip shops! This city is full of brilliant people finding creative ways to transform all sorts of different objects and materials – so the Cocoon will feature a selection of great ideas and activities for families to get involved in.”
The free event runs from 10-4 on Sunday 30 August in Queen Square – visit http://www.at-bristol.org.uk for more information.
